Nom de Plume

March 16th, 2009 · View Comments

Before March 7, 2009, I had never danced a solo in a belly dance festival.  I’ve danced by myself at restaurants, and for friends, but never have I done a solo for such a large audience.  I’m so glad that I finally did this!  It was quite scary, but I think I did all right.  Next time, it won’t be quite so bad.  ;)

The song was “Nom de Plume” by Calexico and I designed the concept for the costume and had it made for me by a very talented seamstress and fellow belly dancer.  I really enjoyed working with Amanda and I hope to work with her in the future.

I will have to wait until the video comes out to really see how well I did, but I have some pictures to share now at least.

Thanks to all my family and friends who came to see me dance.  Your support means so much to me!

I can’t wait to dance in the next Spring Fest.  I suppose its time to starting thinking of what I want to do!

  • just breathtaking- the dance the photos, YOU!
i have only seen belly dancing once- and i was simply mesmerized.
  • The dance does have that effect on some people! It certainly has that effect on me! Thanks for the comments and visiting my blog! :)
  • Beautiful! You look so graceful and peaceful.
  • Thank you! I was a bit nervous, but I'm glad it doesn't show through. ;)
  • Heather, you look beautiful up there! I can see that you were really enjoying yourself. I can't wait to see the video. Your costume is fantastic as well!
  • Awww, thanks Amanda! I did enjoy myself, I want to do it again. :)
  • The costume is very endearing. It's like a mermaid vixen, with what seems like 'seaweed' and 'nets' on the costume. I'm part middle eastern, so I've always danced in the Mediterranean style. Dancing is a huge part of the culture. Thanks for sharing photos!
  • Interesting observations, Winona! I can see the mermaid resemblance, now. When I designed it, I wanted it to loosely have the feel of a bird to it. A raven, actually. :) Very cool that you're a dancer as well! It is very much embedded into the lives of women in this culture.
  • Gorgeous! I would love to see you dance. I have a secret desire to belly dance. There's something so very primal and familiar about it. Maybe some day I'll let myself do it.

Where is the story of the transformation from weighing 70+ more pounds to this beautiful goddess dancing in these photos?
  • You should take a class! It feels so natural for me to dance this way. I danced when I was heavier too, and I still felt like a goddess. :) I don't think I've ever posted a story other than what is in the OWR ebook. Maybe I'll have to write a post about it. :) Thank you for your beautiful words.
  • your costume is beautiful and so are you.
  • Thank you, Alissa! It was really fun to design and work with the seamstress.
  • Heather you look stunning up there on stage! I'm sure you were awesome. Beautiful pictures.
  • Awww thanks Ingrid! :)
