Hullo Out There!

April 22nd, 2009 · View Comments

As you may have noticed, I have not been posting lately.  Here in the small town of Cabanga, CR, its not easy to get internet access.  Being without a motor vehicle makes it difficult to get to an internet cafe.  We can ride our bikes up the big, rocky hills, but we have to go at times when the sun isn’t out.  One attempt at this almost gave us heatstroke!  One of our options is the bus system, which is what we used today.

I am currently in a small internet cafe in the town of Arenal, CR.  Joe and I packed our laptops into our backpacks and headed out the door to catch an early bus into town.  Its an unusually cool day, probably because its rainy and cloudy.  The wet season won’t be here for another few months, but it still rains on a semi regular basis.

Here is a picture of our rental house we are living in.

It is small and simple.  We had to buy a refridgerator and a mattress.  Other than that, we don’t have any more furniture.  That will come slowly with time, along with our Spanish.  Shardul is doing fine, he likes being able to go outside and walk around the yard.

He still prefers to drink out of the sink!

This is the road we live on, it doesn’t get too much traffic, and when it does get some of it consists of livestock.

Life can be difficult sometimes with the culture shock and language barrier, but each day things get a little better.  All in all, I’m glad we are here and I’m trying my best to make things work out.

Adios for now!  I’ll update more later. :)

  • I loved places like this too. So cool, free from any pollution and the environment is so refreshing. One can't help but sleep, and if coupled with good music, oh my, the scene is just perfect. Perfect to those who wants to get out of the "noise" of the cities.
  • Yes, the air is amazing. We came from Salt Lake City where the air can be a problem at times, particularly in the winter durin "inversions". I think I had a perpetual cough for the last 3 months we were there. Down here, the cough has gone.

    HI Heather
Sunday dinner just isn't the same without you and Joe. We miss you lots and lots. So how is the weather, and the house in the forest. Any strange little animal visitors. No spiders i hope!
    Keep us informed!
    Aunt Sheri
  • Hi Sheri! I miss Sunday dinners very much right now. Weather is hot, humid and rainy. No strange visitors besides all the bugs that eat us up. Miss you tons!
  • Hi, Hope all is well, I know it is few and far between now to check your computer, but
I left you an award on my blog.
    Mandy
  • Thanks for the award, Mandy! I did get a chance to check it out, but I don't think I'll be able to pass it on right now, unfortunately. Maybe when we have a more reliable connection.
  • So beautiful!! I am so jealous! Best wishes and luck in your new home!! :)
  • Hi Lauren! Thanks for the well wishes! I bet you're not jealous of my million bug bites all over my body. ;)
  • Heather! You guys made it and look at your cute new home! I can't wait to hear more about your new life there. Looks like Shardul is loving it there too!
  • Hi Ingrid! Shardul is quite happy going outside when he pleases. He stayed out till almost dawn last night!
  • what an adventure!
  • Indeed! Life is pretty mellow for the most part, but we hope to meet some more people and get out traveling the country more.
  • Great t o hear some news Heather.....missed your postings. All looks amazing out there!! You have the right attitude and things will get easier day by day for sure (naturally with a few ups and downs along the way....probably like 2 steps forward and 1 step backward for a little while.) but eventually you both will look back at your begining trials and tribulations and giggle as you remember your fears and anxieties back then......you will be fine as your hearts are already there!!!
Keep posting when you can as we all love to hear/see things are going ok for you both!!!
    Bon courage and keep smiling!!!

  • Can't you get some kind of wireless? Or at least connect through your iPhone/blackberry? We'd be happy with any info from you :).
  • We can't get any wireless at our current location, but hopefully we will have no problem in the house we build.
  • Relieved to hear you arrived safe and sound.

Cutest lil' house! I like your neighbor. :D
  • Hullo Earthmother! Very good to hear from you as well. :) The house is cozy, and we're still meeting all sorts of neighbors.
  • I hope Shardul and Miss Piggy become fast friends!
  • Beautiful! I just remember our first few weeks on "Island time!" Very Exciting and challenging at the same time. Your house is cute as a button, enjoy the beautiful weather and smile smile smile! Mandy
  • Thanks Mandy! It's good to know that someone else has been through a similar situation. Where were you living, and are you still there?
  • Mandy
I was on St.Thomas, and while it is still "USA" it is like another country. We were there for almost 2 years and are now back in the States (Charleston, SC). It is good to be back, but I miss the laid back Island life and the beautiful Carribean! Have FUN!!

  • Welcome Hope, and thank you for the comment!
  • Heather and Jeff
Hi guys!! I hope you're happy living there. I'm sure it's quite an adjustment! We've been wondering how you're doing since you left and even though we weren't in the same state or half of the country, it seems weird that you aren't in Utah any more and we "miss" you!!!!!
    Hugs and love,
    Heather and Jeff
  • Heather and Jeff! Hey you two! Yes, its very different here, we didn't even know half of what we were getting into, and that is after visiting the country 3 different times! I think its weird that we're not in Utah either, it has always been my lifelong home.
  • Your house is adorable and location is gorgeous. I hope it soon feels like "home":-)
  • Thanks Erin! We are adjusting slowly. Today we will get hot water in our shower. Yay! :)
  • It's good to hear from you! The scenery is beautiful. How long will you be renting?
  • It's good to hear from you as well! We will probably be renting for the next 6 months or so. We want to try on this life for size, so to speak, before we start building :)
  • those pics are gorgeous and just looking @ them relaxes me!
  • It is very low key here. We do quite a bit of relaxing here. :)
  • Mom
Thanks for the pics. I love them! MOre! I miss you!
  • Hi Mommy! We'll post some more soon! I love you and miss you!!
  • Landon
    Felicitaciones!

Your little house looks cute and fun!

I love your view of the surrounding area and wildlife/traffic!
  • Hola Landon! We do have a lovely view. :)
  • Amy
I LOVE where you live! The house is adorable! I'm so jealous!!!! : D
