The Good, The Bad and the Unknown

July 23rd, 2009 · View Comments

Hello all!  First off, I want to apologize for my lack of activity on KombuchaCHIC.  Life has been a whirlwind of changes and uncertainty, and now that things are finally stabilizing, I can refocus my energy here.  I want to let everyone know a little bit of what has happened in the past three months.  I’ll start with the bad news first.

The Bad:

We had to leave Costa Rica and come back home.  I talked a bit about this on our other blog, and I’d prefer not to elaborate on the reasons why we had to make this difficult decision.  I will say that our three months living there, was very difficult and we faced many challenges on daily living.  Putting our dreams aside was painful, but we both realized that sometimes you have to make sacrifices in order to move forward in life.  There is a good side to this, though.

The Good:

Home is where the heart is and I truly feel at ease coming back to Utah.  This is where the majority of our family and friends live, so we have a much larger support system than we did in Costa Rica.  It was very hard to live in such isolation.  Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself is to be around people who care for you truly and deeply.  I also have a much broader variety of foods to eat here.  Eating raw wasn’t really an option where we lived, and I’m very happy to be back eating in a way that makes me feel healthy.  Shardul is happy, too.  ;)

The Unknown:

What next you ask?  We’d like to know ourselves!  Right now, I’m looking into going back to school and finished my degree in Visual Art & Design.  It’s been about 3 years since I was last in school, so it may be a challenge getting back into the swing of things.  I’m thinking I want to broaden my studies into other areas as well.  Joe and I played around with the idea of moving to another mountain town for the snowboarding season, and we may try that at some point.  I think I’m going to take yoga teacher training so I can become an instructor.  Getting back into teaching dance might be another option.

So a lot is in the air right now, but we’re gradually getting our feet back on the ground.  One of my goals for this summer is to finally finish that second issue of One Week Raw.  Check back soon for updates on that, and other exciting ventures into the world of raw food!

  • welcome back!
  • Thanks Alissa! :)
  • Howdy! Sorry it didn't work out but glad to see you back. One door closes another opens, eh?
  • Hey ZB! Yes, indeed I'm hoping we can get into some fun and exciting ventures in the States again.
  • I will always remember our awesome times on St.Thomas fondly, my hubby has to remind me about the things that drove me crazy! That first year was close to hell (or maybe just the equator) as I've known, it is so HARD to not have a support system. Makes you appreciate what you have so much more! Glad you made it out alive, look back on the hard times and laugh! Most people never leave their comfort zones...!
  • The equator is difficult to live near, isn't it? Thanks so much for all your words of support. Its good to know that someone else has been through something similar, even though we weren't there nearly as long as you were. It certainly does make you appreciate home more.
  • It might be pretty difficult to get back to school now. But good luck with that, hope the transition won't be too rough for you.
  • I think that going to school would be easier to do than finding a job, but that's just me. It's been going all right, thanks.

No experience is all bad when you share it.

Since you are back in Utah, I can speak for Abby when I say that we would both love to meet you when Abby and I take our annual trip to Moab for our anniversary in October.
  • Hi Richard! I'd love to meet you and Abby! Let us know when you're in town! :)
  • No matter what happened it looks like it was an incredible adventure and learning experience. Not many can do that in their lifetimes. Welcome back to the states :)
  • That's how I'm looking at it, too. I'm glad we did it, and if we try it again then we'll know what to do differently.
  • I'm sorry to hear that you had to cut your Costa Rican dream short. BUT, I am relieved to know you are both well, near family and friends, and looking ahead to the next adventure.

    Many blessings to you.
  • Thank you for your thoughts and words, Earthmother! It is quite a comfort to be around people that love us and care about us.
  • doohickie
Sounds like you had some tough times down there. I'm relieved to hear you made it out together. Many people never even attempt something like you did these last few months; even if it was a nightmare (which it kind of sounds like it was), you bring back experiences that most people can't even imagine.

Regroup, recharge, and relax... more adventures await.

Glad to have you back with us in the States.
  • Thanks doohickie! We did have a lot of hard times, but we had some good times as well. As long as we can learn from the experience, then I'm ok with it!
