Fall Activities

October 9th, 2009 · View Comments

Life has been more on the busy side lately, as both Joe and I are in school.  This means a lot of studying, reading and school work.  Finding time to spend outdoors is also a big priority in our house.  We try to dedicate at least an hour to some sort of active, outdoor pursuit.

Mountain biking and hiking are usually how we get our fix.  We’ve been riding all over the place, usually sticking to City Creek Canyon, which is almost at our doorstep!  One of the great things about living in the Salt Lake Valley, is all the access to the Wasatch Mountains.  We spend a lot of time in the canyons, here we are riding our bikes up Big Cottonwood Canyon.

It was fun discovering the old Alta Tunnel up there!  Mines are pretty cool, but I’m sure glad that mining isn’t my profession.  I think I’d get a bit clausterphobic in there!

It made me think of goblins.  Does that make me a LOTR nerd?  ;)

What is not to love about a beautiful ride, amid the bright fall colors!  I just hope they stick around a little longer.  It might be a very early snow season this year!

How do you like to get your excerise in the fall?

If you have time, Abby and I will be in Moab next week, and would love to meet you. We are driving to Farmington, New Mexico Sunday, Oct. 18, and will be in Moab in time for dinner Monday. We are staying there all week, and hopefully hiking and enjoying the splendor of southern Utah, in celebration of our wedding there five years ago.
  • Hi Richard! Next week happens to be our wedding anniversary, too! We might just take you up on that and see you down in Moab. It would be the perfect time and place to spend a few days. :)

Email me and I'll send you a phone number. -R
  • That looks like so much fun. I wish I was a better bike rider.
  • It definitely takes a few times before you get comfortable. I've been mountain biking for around 2 1/2 years and I'm finally feeling more confident going down rocky trails. There are a few tips that help, though like standing up in your seat, leaning back, and relaxing your arms. Of course, more than anything, you have to build up the stamina for longer rides.
  • It's been a while since I've been on a bike. I need to work on my balance :-)
  • Oh, give me land, lots of land
    Under starry skies above,
    Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wild open
    Country that I love,
    Don't fence me in.

I'm with you — gotta spend time outdoors each day or I go batty!

I love hiking. You can find me (and Maya!) in the woods 3-4 times a week. The colors are magnificent right now, and the smells, oh my!
  • LOL You always make me smile, Earthmother. :) Hiking is one of my favorites too! Now I just need myself a puppy to take with me, and I'll be set!
  • Beautiful pictures (as always!!). We've been biking a lot too, we aren't as serious though. We go to nearby parks. Although I would love to go on a bike trail. We've been talking about doing it before it gets to cold. After looking at your pics I definitely have the itch!
  • Thanks Lauren! You should try an easy mountain bike trail, I bet you'd have a lot of fun.
