Exercise in the Cold

December 3rd, 2009 · View Comments

In Salt Lake City, we are now experiencing a moment in transition from fall to winter.  It’s very cold outside, but there isn’t much snow falling, especially in the valley.  However, we’ve still gone snowboarding 3 times this season up at Brighton!  Here in the heart of the valley, it’s not quite winter, but its not quite fall as well.  I’ve put some of my warmer activities like mountain biking aside and now I’m biding my time until I can go out and snowshoe or cross country ski for a few hours a day.  One sure way to get some exercise in this weather is walking and hiking.  No matter how wishy washy the weather can be, or how much energy I have, I can always just bundle up and move my legs for a while.  Here’s a few pics of our Ensign Peak hike on Sunday.

I think we managed to get out of the smog a bit!

We brought some yummy Fruition bars with us to eat when we reached the peak.

A bit ravenous for some energy, I would say.

The last time we hiked this, it was a few years ago at night.  We ended up taking some fun pics that time.

How do you like to exercise in the cold?  Do you bundle up and take brisk walks, go to the gym, or work out at home?  Tell me how you move when the going gets cold!

  • cool! thanks a lot for that post, it's very useful for me
  • I like the view of that delicate fog over the city. That looks really cold and it is interesting to see such weather and temperature without a snow. Guess that is something really exciting to have such a great view so close.

Thanks for all the comments, everyone! For some reason, the comments are being posted under Wordpress rather than the Disqus system, and they aren't showing up as a result. I'm not sure why this is happening. Is the Disqus system not showing up?
  • Well, as you may have noticed, I figured out how to import all of the Wordpress comments into Disqus. That is a good solution, if the system isn't showing up. Thanks for commenting everyone!
  • Since I live in SoCal, I really don't change too much except my clothing and my schedule to accommodate the earlier nightfall. I get most of my exercise by paddling my outrigger canoe on the ocean, which I can do year-round. Like this morning: when I left home it was pretty brisk outside, but I dressed in layers and was in a tank & shorts by the time I finished a 6 mile paddling route.
  • Ooooh how fun! I haven't canoed yet, but I LOVE kayaking! What a great way to get an upper body workout. Lucky you to not have to bundle up, too!
  • I like that last form of exercise the best! :D

But...if there's no one around to smooch, hiking in the woods works for me.
  • Yeah, I have to agree, that is one of my favorites! ;)

I have trained for a few marathons through the winter, it's hard, but it toughened me up, I think.

But now I usually gym it.

I'd love for you to check out my blog - giveaway coming and workout songs!

  • Outdoor winter marathon training sounds tough! You probably get a bit used to it, thought. Checking out your blog right now, thanks!
  • Unfortunitly, I move my workouts inside. I have a little workout room in the basement with a treadmill, weights and heavy bag. When the weather isn't too bad I go for walks or hikes outside, but I am not a fan of being cold, so it's mostly indoors. Love the pics!
  • That sounds nice! At least you are staying warm!
